I have to admit I’m rather amazed at how far technology and society have come in regard to the internet over the last couple of years. The video games, the online media and mobile connections have taken leaps and bounds in becoming mainstream. Unfortunately though they are still obscenely expensive and the big companies are still trying to milk us for every penny they can. Well at least one, even if their reasons are to remain afloat against their bigger and meaner cousins, has decided to increase the bar by lowering their prices. Starting today, 8/26/10 Virgin Mobile is now offering unlimited data (that was said in that cosmic announcer voice) for $40 dollars! That’s right, $40 dollars!
Why should you care you ask? Well because for those of us that have iPod Touches, iPads, iPhones that are now acting like iPods or don’t have a data connection, Zunes, Netbooks, Laptops or even a desktop with WiFi you can now have up to five of those devices connected at once to 3G speeds (actual speeds will vary of course) and for only $40 a month. In order to have five devices connected at once you will need the Virgin Mobile MiFi which is $150 but when you consider that there isn’t a cap and that the closest price from a competitor is $60 with a 5GB cap it begins to look a little better.
Now obviously this is situational (depending on how many and which devices you have). The MiFi is reported to last for four hours on a single charge (kind of weak but then again there are usually plugs and I’m sure there is a car adapter) and connects to Sprints 3G network. For the eastcoast that is a good thing and rather acceptable depending on what part of the region you reside in.
I will certainly be looking into this after I get a tablet and review my current devices. I just picked up an Alienware m11x which I’ll be reviewing later. I purposely avoided any form of celluar connection during the configuration because I had a feeling something like Virgin Mobile’s unlimited plan would emerge or I could find a safe way to tether my Droid Incredible (already am using a handy app from the Android Marketplace to tether directly to my m11x) without paying an arm or leg.
So if you’re interested in having the ability to game anywhere at any time (dependant on connection of course) you should check out virginmobileusa.com and if you sign up, for shits and giggles, let them know we sent you!
